A word from our Sensei

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in Alamo City Aikido, a traditional Japanese martial art dojo in San Antonio teaching the way of harmony.

Aikido is a highly effective martial art which many police agencies teach for their self-defense and arrest techniques.  However, aikido employs the principles of harmony, unity and conflict resolution through non-violence.

In the words of O'Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido:

“Budo is not felling the opponent by force; nor is it a tool to lead the world into destruction by arms.  True Budo is to accept the spirit of the universe, keep the peace of the world, correctly produce, protect, and cultivate all beings in nature.”

Our dojo is affiliated with the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU).

In this spirit, our dojo strives to honor these principles as passed down to me by my teachers, Mitsugi Saotome Shihan and Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan.

-Craig Slack Sensei, Head Instructor

On May 9 - 11 Alamo City Aikido hosted a spectacular seminar with William Gleason Sensei.  Gleason Sensei began the seminar responding to a multitude of requests on breathing exercises.  His breathing techniques and emphasis on bringing everything back to "your one point" helped us focus on the underlying principles of all aikido movement.  We practiced such concepts as 'breathing in the attack,' leading movement with the 'fire hand' and following it up with the 'water hand.'  Gleason Sensei showed us how beautiful technique is if done correctly.  We all got hands-on experience of direct transmission as Sensei walked around the mat and allowed us to experience what power feels like without muscle.  Alamo City Aikido would like to thank all our guests traveling in from Austin, Houston, Mission and even Boston.  We all had a great time both on and off the mat!
