 Adult & Youth Membership
Details and Costs

Both adults and youths may join Alamo City Aikido.  Starting at age 13, members are considered adults and may attend all classes.  Youth, ages 7 - 12, may join in conjunction with an adult membership and will be admitted by Sensei on a case-by-case basis.

Though there are no long term contracts, membership is a month-to-month contract that can be terminated at any time with 30 days notice.

There are no restrictions on the number of classes an adult may attend; adult students are encouraged to attend as many classes as desired.  Youth may only attend beginners classes.

All students need a plain white karate or judo style uniform (keiko gi) to attend classes. Alamo City Aikido has uniforms available for purchase.

There is also an annual registration fee paid to the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU), the organization that sets our teaching qualifications and testing guidelines.

Costs are as follows:
Adult monthly dues:  $65
Youth monthly dues: $40
Uniform:  $30
ASU annual registration:  $35

Beginning Aikido

Alamo City Aikido offers 2 classes per week specifically designed for beginner aikido students (see our schedule page)  The beginner classes focus on basic movement, falling, and footwork skills.  Adult beginners are not restricted to attending only these classes and are still encouraged to attend all other classes.

Private Lessons

Sensei is available to teach private lessons.  The rate is $70 per hour.  Please contact us for details.

Other Costs and Equipment

As students progress there will be other costs involved and equipment needed.
A short summary of these follow:

Testing:  Testing is part of the aikido curriculum.  As students progress they will be expected to test in accordance with standards set forth by Saotome Shihan and Sensei.  There are 6 ranks before Shodan (black belt level), and there are minimum time requirements between each level. The fee for each of these tests is $45.  Test requirements can be found by clicking here.

Weapons:  Training with weapons is an integral part of aikido.  We use bokken (wooden sword), jo (staff), tanto (wooden knife), and shinai (practice sword made of bamboo & leather) in our training.  All of these pieces of equipment, though not required to initially start practice, do need to be purchased eventually.  The costs of these items varies with the quality purchased and the supplier.  Information on different suppliers is available on our LINKS page.

Uniforms:  Students are expected to wear hakama (traditional Japanese pants) after passing the first test.  Please see the LINKS page for more information. Additional keiko gi (practice uniforms) may be purchased when needed.

Seminars:  As part of our development it is essential that we seek out and experience instruction from advanced teachers of aikido.  Alamo City Aikido regularly invites senior instructors to our dojo for teaching and student development seminars.  There is an additional cost involved in these seminars ranging from $70 to $100.  All students are highly encouraged to participate.

Alamo City Aikido is a non-profit educational organization .  All dues and monies collected are used exclusively for the continued operation of the organization and school.  We have no employees and no one receives compensation for giving instruction.  Our goal is to provide to all, regardless of economic status, a special place dedicated to learning the principles of Aikido to better ourselves and our community.  Scholarships are available based upon financial need.
